Menatelecom is a licensed telecommunications operator based in the Kingdom of Bahrain and is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Kuwait Finance House (Bahrain). menatelecom has established itself as one of the nationwide full service telecommunications operators in the Kingdom.

In January 2007 menatelecom successfully secured a nationwide Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) licence in Bahrain which will allow the company to provide customers with the full range of fixed and nomadic telecommunications services throughout the Kingdom. In partnership with Motorola, menatelecom has rollout the nationwide of its FWA network, deploying a world-class technology solution based on state-of-the-art WiMAX technology. The objective is to provide customers, both business and mass-market consumer, with innovative products and services based on quality, reliability and exceptional value for money.

To ensure that it is offering the most advanced and innovative technology to its customers menatelecom had the foresight to recognise that the future of WiMAX technology will be in full mobility and by choosing a solution based on the IEEE 802.16e WiMAX standard, rather than the older but much less flexible IEEE 802.16d fixed WiMAX standard, Mena Telecom was planning for the future. In selecting a partner for the deployment and operation of the network, menatelecom had to be confident that it chose not only an equipment vendor with a reputation for excellence but also an acknowledge leader in the development and deployment of IEEE 802.16e WiMAX technology.

menatelecom selected Motorola as its technology partner because it is universally acknowledged throughout the telecommunications industry as the leading supplier of WiMAX technology based on the very latest IEEE802.16e mobile WiMAX standard. menatelecom’s association with Motorola brings a world class technology partner committed to the full development of the mobile WiMAX standard.

The wireless nature of the WiMAX network introduces an inherent nomadic mobility, where the subscriber terminal (e.g. phone handset, PC or wireless PDA device) does not need to be in a fixed position within the coverage area. This allows mobility similar to cordless phones, but over a significantly wider area, in fact the whole of populated Bahrain. This nomadic ability, coupled with the anticipated incorporation of WiMAX within Intel based laptops, will allow access to broadband services anywhere within Bahrain; a major improvement over current WiFi hotspots.

I just got Menatelecom's "MYKEY" which is basically a USB that you plug to your computer.

I subscribed to the BD.28 unlimited MYKEY service. To be frank I was astonished with the service, for the first time ever I am getting almost 14MB on my laptop !!! Amaazing.

Only downside is its a personal connection which means you cannot have it for home and share it with others ! works for me though as am always on the move. Nice site btw.

with a world record of ping time of (11346 ms) never in my life have i experienced this not even on dial up days!

I have been using the Internet in Bahrain ( as well as other countries ) since 1995. I am a current customer of all 3 main ISP's ( Batelco , Zain , and Mena Telecom) , here I will be concentrating on Mena Telcom. I have been using their WiMax Service at home for 18 months now and I am still a happy customer. I am on the 1MB bandwidth package with a telephone line and (6GB monthly limit)

The Pros:
1. You buy the (CPE) or (MyKey) device from the shop , take it home , connect it to the power and it works instantly, no setup no wires ,no technician needed. Presto ( 10 out of 10 for a Fool Proof and friendly device)
2. In the whole of my 18 months of usage , I have had to call their customer service / call centre less than 10 times and that was mostly because of my desired customization -port forwarding etc... not because of the service degradation.
3. At any given time (within the monthly limit) a SpeedTest would yield results between 820K and 1.2M , which is very much acceptable (the norm is + or - 20%) without big hikes, service is suitable for browsing , e-mails , watching short movies on youtube etc...
4. Friendly customer service staff at the call centre ( and the waiting time is acceptable so far) , Friendly staff at shops ( but sometimes the waiting time is too long - especially after 6 PM as most shops are still under staffed) , good opening hours ( till 9PM ) in most shops.
5. Very good technical support ( provided by Motorola - though) - that's clever :-)

Cons:
1. Mena Telecom charges BD.20 setup fees for a service that needs no setup at home! ( well the device has already been pre-programmed , and considering that you can flash its firmware in a few seconds ) BD.20 seems really over the top.
2. Service is not suitable at for online gaming (playing PS3 or Wii online), with frequent disconnections from the gaming servers - it took Mena Telecom almost 10 months to fix that part , but the fix comes at the price of an additional BD.3 on your monthly bill to get the Gaming optimized package!!! (Well as a courtesy to all existing customers who have opened support tickets , suffering from bad online gaming experience , Mena should have optimized their connection FOR FREE!) But that did not happen. I have passed on that BD.3 additional package since that I have other connections at home , I use Zain@ home for my gaming experience.

3. Like all their competitors / ISP's in Bahrain they do not answer their e-mails! (I do not understand why all those telcos who are supposed to be technology leaders ,suddenly become tech laggards when it comes to providing customer service and support online! , when a customer of an ISP has a problem he/she would first attempt to send an e-mail - maybe include a screen shot too , but sadly all 3 companies never reply to e-mail - or sometimes reply after 60 days!!! What a joke (you guys want a FREE online e-support and FAQ system that allows customers to directly interact with your tech. team - let me me know)
3. Like all their competitors / ISP's in Bahrain they do have a monthly Limit! - I honestly do not understand that limit thing , in a small country with just over 1 million in population! How do ISP's provide services in the US for $30 , or in India with 1 billion ? Want to look at Middle East? Egypt has no monthly limit and over 8 million Internet users if not more.
